Winter Palace Square is the central square of St. Petersburg and one of the city’s most important squares. It is also the finest example of the harmonious integration of various architectural styles and one of Russia’s most renowned tourist attractions. On regular days, the square is bustling with crowds and lively activity. The biggest highlight of Winter Palace Square is the earliest and most famous of the Russian tsars’ residences—the Winter Palace—after which the square is named. Its pale green walls, complemented by white columns and a golden ensemble of sculptures, add a layer of splendid vibrancy.

The magnificent Baroque architecture perfectly complements the elegant neoclassical buildings nearby, together forming an enchanting fairytale-like castle complex. At the center of the square stands the Alexander Column, a red granite pillar that is 47.5 meters tall and weighs approximately 500 tons, making it the tallest granite column in the world. Although Palace Square lacks the cafes, restaurants, and bars commonly found in urban squares elsewhere, it becomes the vibrant heart of the city during grand annual festivals.
