Moyka River

The Moyka River is a river that encircles the central area of St. Petersburg, stretching 5 kilometers in length and 40 meters in width. It originates from the Fontanka River near the Summer Garden, flows past Palace Square and Nevsky Prospekt, and empties into the Neva River. It is connected to the Neva River via the Swan Canal, the Winter Canal, and the Kryukov Canal.

In 1711, Peter the Great ordered the riverbanks to be reinforced. Initially, there were four bridges spanning the Moyka River: the Blue Bridge, the Green Bridge, the Yellow Bridge, and the Red Bridge. Among them, the Blue Bridge, located at Saint Isaac's Square, is 97 meters wide and is the widest bridge in the city. In 1798, construction began on the river embankment, which was faced with red granite and adorned with ornate railings. By 1811, when the project was completed, it was discovered that the river water had become extremely muddy and unsuitable for cooking. Along the Moyka River embankment, there are many magnificent 18th-century buildings: the Stroganov Palace, the Razumovsky Palace, the Yusupov Palace, the New Holland Arch, the Circular Market, the Mikhailovsky Castle, as well as the last home and museum of Alexander Pushkin.

Today, there are 15 bridges over the Moyka River, most of which are artistic historic bridges: the Green Bridge, the Red Bridge, the Bridge of Kisses, the Blue Bridge, the Post Office Bridge, the Big Stable Bridge, the Triple Bridge, the First Engineers Bridge, and the Singer Bridge.
