The name of the Blue Bridge may inevitably remind people of the classic film "Waterloo Bridge," in which the "Blue Bridge" refers to the Waterloo Bridge spanning the River Thames, not the Blue Bridge in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Nevertheless, the Blue Bridge in Saint Petersburg has also witnessed countless stories of joy and sorrow.

The Blue Bridge spans the Moyka River, is 97.3 meters wide, and has a span of 41 meters, making it the widest bridge in Saint Petersburg. It is sometimes claimed to be the widest bridge in the world—though this is not recognized by the Guinness World Records. The Blue Bridge gets its name from its color and is located in the city center on Saint Isaac's Square, in front of the Mariinsky Palace. The first cast-iron bridge was designed by architect William Heste in 1805 and completed in 1818. Between 1842 and 1844, the northern side of the bridge was widened to 97.3 meters, matching the width of the adjacent Saint Isaac's Square. In the 19th century, there was a tradition of naming bridges crossing the Moyka River after colors. Today, only four colored bridges remain, the other three being the Red Bridge, the Green Bridge, and the Yellow Bridge. Of these, three have retained their original names, although the Yellow Bridge has been renamed the Singer Bridge. Nowadays, most of the Blue Bridge serves as a parking lot.
