Green Bridge of Saint Petersburg

The Green Bridge, also known as Police Bridge or People's Bridge, is a bridge in Saint Petersburg, Russia, spanning the Moyka River. It is the city's first cast iron bridge. Buildings near the Green Bridge include the Chicherin House and the Stroganov Palace.

In 1713, Nevsky Prospekt was constructed on the left bank of the Neva River. In 1716, a wooden bridge was built at the intersection with the Moyka River. In 1730, it was painted green, hence the name Green Bridge. In 1768, the bridge was renamed Police Bridge due to its proximity to the main police headquarters of Saint Petersburg. In 1806, the current cast iron bridge was constructed. In 1842, Police Bridge was widened to accommodate the increasing traffic on Nevsky Prospekt. In 1844, it became the first bridge in Russia to be paved with asphalt. Between 1904 and 1907, the bridge was widened again and equipped with street lighting due to the installation of tram tracks. In 1918, Police Bridge was renamed People's Bridge. In 1998, the original name Green Bridge was restored.
