St. Petersburg

Commonly known as "Petersburg," St. Petersburg is located in the northwest of Russia along the Baltic Sea coast. It is a federal city of the Russian Federation and also serves as the capital of Leningrad Oblast. As the second-largest city in Russia after Moscow, St. Petersburg is the country’s second most important political and economic center, as well as the central city of the Northwestern region and a major hub for both land and water transportation across Russia.

St. Petersburg has no skyscrapers, and its skyline remains relatively low. Current regulations prohibit the construction of high-rise buildings in the city center. The 310-meter-tall Saint Petersburg TV Tower is the tallest structure in the city, while the 122.5-meter-tall Peter and Paul Cathedral remains the tallest building to date. Most historic buildings in the city center are 18th- and 19th-century Baroque and Neoclassical structures, and there are numerous landmarks. On the left bank of the Neva River, south of Vasilyevsky Island and beyond the Palace Bridge, lies the Admiralty Building. The vast Hermitage Museum complex stretches along the Palace Embankment, including the Baroque-style Winter Palace, once the imperial residence of the Russian Empire, and the Neoclassical Marble Palace. In front of the Winter Palace is the city's main semicircular square, Palace Square, along with the Alexander Column.

St. Petersburg boasts many famous landmarks, including St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Trinity Cathedral, the Mariinsky Palace, the Astoria Hotel, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Yusupov Palace, New Holland Island, and Senate Square. The 18th-century Bronze Horseman statue of Peter the Great on Senate Square is considered the city’s most iconic symbol.
