Barcelona History Museum

Introduction The Barcelona History Museum presents the history of Barcelona from Roman times to the modern era. The museum consists of two parts: one was originally the Romanesque Royal Palace (Palau Reial Major), and the other was formerly the Born Market (Mercat de Born).

The Romanesque Royal Palace was the residence of the Catalan-Aragonese monarchy, built in the 14th century. On the other side of the gate, the Royal Chapel of Santa Àgata features a famous Epiphany altarpiece painted by Jaume Huguet.

The most striking feature of the palace is the 16th-century King Martín’s Watchtower. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of the Gothic Quarter.

In the Tinell Hall, massive semicircular stone columns support the ceiling. In 1493, Christopher Columbus, back from discovering the Americas, was received here by Catholic Monarchs Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

The Born Market is a tall iron-framed structure that served as a fruit and vegetable market until 1971. In 2002, Roman ruins and artifacts were discovered beneath the market, leading to its transformation into part of the Barcelona History Museum. Today, visitors can see remains of public baths, city walls, and more on the original site. Transportation Metro: Jaume I Station on Line 4. Tickets/Opening Hours Ticket: €4.

Opening Hours: 10:00–20:00, with a lunch break from 15:00–16:00 (October to May 15), and 10:00–15:00 on Sundays and holidays. Closed every Monday.
