The Architect of God’s Creations – Park Güell from Gaudí’s Series

Park Güell, situated on the hill of El Carmel in Barcelona's Gràcia district, was designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and constructed between 1900 and 1914. It is one of Gaudí’s iconic works and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Originally an unsuccessful commercial housing development, the project was initiated by Count Eusebi Güell, who was inspired by the British Garden City Movement. He selected this barren, sparsely vegetated mountain with hopes of creating a residential area that offered fresh air and expansive scenic views.

However, only two houses were ultimately built. One was the intended model home, which was completed in 1904 but failed to attract buyers. Following Güell’s advice, Gaudí used his own savings to purchase it and moved in with his family in 1906, living there until 1926. The fairytale-like candy cottage building at the entrance was originally planned as the guardhouse and porter’s residence.

The terrace area in the park offers the most expansive views. Travelers can enjoy the most beautiful sunrises in Barcelona here and even gaze over the whole city. Entry to this area is free before 8 AM. If you want to save on the ticket and still witness the stunning sunrise, be prepared to wake up early.

The mosaic art on the wavy stone benches on the terrace is the work of Gaudí’s students. Although they may look rigid, they were meticulously designed with ergonomic considerations and are actually quite comfortable to sit on.
