Columbus Monument

Introduction The Barcelona Columbus Monument is located at the end of La Rambla. In 1493, when Columbus returned from his first voyage, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed him in triumph here in Barcelona. To commemorate this historic event, as well as to celebrate the 1888 Universal Exposition, the 50-meter-tall cylindrical monument was built in 1886. At its top stands a statue of Columbus holding a book in one hand and pointing toward the direction of the Americas with the other. Today, the monument’s observation tower has become an important landmark of the Port of Barcelona.

The interior of the monument features an elevator that takes visitors up to enjoy panoramic views of the harbor. However, the elevator accommodates only two people at a time, so there is often a long queue at the entrance. Transport Metro: Drassanes Station on Line 3. Opening Hours: June–September 9:00–20:00; October–March 10:00–13:30 and 15:30–18:30, no lunch break on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays; April–May 10:00–13:30 and 15:30–19:30, no lunch break on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
