Royal Square

Introduction The Royal Square was built in the mid-19th century. The buildings surrounding the square were reconstructed from the original Franciscan monastery, with largely consistent architectural structures. Some of the buildings still display signs related to maritime navigation and exploration in the Americas. The square is filled with bars and restaurants and remains lively all year round.

The street lamps in Royal Square were the first project undertaken by Gaudí after he became a qualified architect. The design of their iron helmets already shows his unique style.

Every Sunday morning, a stamp and coin market opens in the square.

The area around Carrer d’Escudellers and Carrer d’Avinyó near the square was once known for its hedonistic and bohemian atmosphere. It is said that Picasso drew inspiration for his masterpiece Les Demoiselles d’Avignon from this very place.
