Introduction Located on Montjuïc Hill, the Fundació Joan Miró opened in 1975 and is the most comprehensive museum dedicated to Joan Miró’s art, with a collection of nearly ten thousand items. The exhibits span various media including paintings, sculptures, textiles, prints, posters, and sketches, reflecting the artist’s remarkable creativity. The collection primarily features works from Miró’s later years. Additionally, there are dozens of pieces known as “Tribute to Miró,” created by modern artists such as Matisse.

It also serves as the headquarters of the Centre de Recerca i Documentació d’Art Contemporani (Center for Contemporary Art Research and Documentation), which frequently hosts exhibitions by avant-garde artists.

Joan Miró (1893–1983): Alongside Picasso and Dalí, he is regarded as one of the leading figures of modern Catalan art. As a child, Miró loved painting, but his father insisted he work as a cashier at a pharmacy, which led to a nervous breakdown. Eventually, his father allowed him to pursue art. In his youth, Miró experimented with then-popular styles such as Fauvism and Cubism, without much success. He then devoted himself to depicting the pastoral landscapes of Catalonia. One of his works, “The Farm,” was purchased by Ernest Hemingway, marking the beginning of his successful career. Later in life, Miró settled on the island of Mallorca, and his style gradually evolved toward realism, characterized by clean lines, bright, and pure colors.
