Palau Güell

Introduction Palau Güell was built by Gaudí in 1888 and is a work that established his reputation as a master of creating magnificent atmospheric spaces.

The family crest of the Güell family, forged in wrought iron between the arches, is exceptionally imposing. The parabolic dome of the central hall features ingenious design, with both the dome and columns clearly influenced by the Alhambra. The variety of chimney designs here were the precursors to many of Gaudí’s later bold chimney creations. Gaudí’s beloved technique of mosaic tile collage was also used on a large scale here for the first time. The curves of the staircases wind around the various floors. The ingenious use of wall tiles creates unexpected expressiveness, making the stables an unconventional masterpiece.

In 1984, Palau Güell was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Transportation Address: Nou de la Rambla 3-5
