Valencia Silk Exchange

The Silk Exchange in Valencia is a national monument of art and history, built in the 15th century by Pere Compte. It is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Valencia and also one of the most renowned Gothic architectural monuments in Europe. Located in the city center, in front of the Central Market and the Chapel of Santos Juanes, it occupies a rectangular area of 1,990 square meters.

On July 4, 1931, it was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument, and on December 5, 1996, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The exchange is divided into three longitudinal and five transverse naves based on the eight columns that support the vaults. The most striking features of the building include the spiral columns inside the Trading Hall, the spiral staircase in the tower, and the Hecamo pillar arches along with the stucco ceilings. The 17.4-meter-high ceiling imparts an air of timeless grandeur to the columns.

The Taula de Canvis (Exchange Table) was decided to be built inside the exchange by the town council in 1407. Thanks to its financial backing, it enjoyed great prestige. Today, the stone trading platforms or desks used for transactions, as well as the first Spanish exchange ledger, are preserved in the Municipal Archive of Valencia.
