As a rising star in the world of architecture, Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner made two of his most outstanding contributions to Barcelona’s built landscape: the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Hospital de Sant Pau. The Palau de la Música Catalana is a masterpiece of Catalan modernist architecture, representing a perfect fusion of color, light, and structure. The colors come from the smooth mosaics and vibrant stained glass both inside and outside the concert hall; the beauty of the light lies in the grand chandelier in the central atrium, which radiates a dazzling glow and creates a unique atmosphere; above the stage, there is also a remarkably lifelike sculpture of angelic musicians playing instruments, making this “the most perfect work of Spanish modernist architecture.”

The Hospital de Sant Pau was built at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, a time when Barcelona was undergoing significant turmoil. Therefore, constructing a large and well-equipped hospital became an urgent priority. Domènech i Montaner rose to the challenge, designing and building the Hospital de Sant Pau. The hospital complex is a uniquely styled architectural ensemble, covering an area of 100,000 square meters, and is situated away from the hustle and bustle of the city in a tranquil location. Its charm lies in the ingenious and harmonious integration of building materials and decorative elements throughout the complex. The main building resembles a Gothic church, featuring tall towers that carry a sense of saving lives. The design and decoration of the hospital are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, greatly meeting the needs of patients.
