Camp Nou

Camp Nou is a football stadium located in Barcelona, Spain, serving as the home ground of La Liga club FC Barcelona. It is one of the most well-known stadiums in the world. With a seating capacity of up to 99,354, it is the largest stadium in Europe and was rated as a five-star stadium by UEFA during the 1998–99 season.

Before Camp Nou was built, the Cathedral Stadium used by Barcelona could only accommodate 60,000 people. At that time, the club felt the stadium was no longer adequate, so they decided to purchase a large piece of land nearby to build a new one. However, in the early stages of planning, there were disputes within the Barcelona board regarding the location. It wasn’t until the new president, Francesc Miró-Sans, took office that construction finally began in 1954. The stadium was named Camp Nou and officially opened on September 24, 1957. The stadium construction committee decided to hold a special celebration ceremony, organized by Mr. Alex Busquets and Mr. Nicolau Casaus. The opening day coincided with the Feast of the Mercè, and the entire city of Barcelona turned out in their finest attire, dressed in the colors of FC Barcelona. The ceremony began with a Mass presided over by Barcelona’s Cardinal Modrego, and the atmosphere was solemn. Many high-ranking figures from politics and sports were seated on the podium alongside Barcelona president Miró-Sans.
