Magic Fountain

The Magic Fountain is the largest fountain in Europe and the second largest in the world. It was designed by engineer Carles Buigas and has now become one of Barcelona's most important tourist attractions. The reason it is called the Magic Fountain is mainly because during music performances, the fountain continuously changes colors and shapes. Coupled with the illuminated National Palace and the cascading water curtains flowing down the steps, it truly transports people into a magical atmosphere that dazzles and amazes — hence the name "Magic Fountain."

The Magic Fountain was first built for the 1929 World’s Fair. After the fair ended, it was abandoned for a time until the 1992 renovation of Barcelona’s architecture, when the musical Magic Fountain was also restored. With 3,620 water jets, 8 different color-changing effects, and 4,760 spotlights, these technical features create the dreamy spectacle of water and light. Whether on a summer evening or a winter night, the show is equally spectacular. When the fountain begins its performance, it attracts numerous visitors who stop to watch. People who come here seem to be infected by the joyful magic, jumping along with the fountain.

During the Magic Fountain performance, the fountain and music are perfectly synchronized. As the music swells, so does the water, reaching heights of over ten meters at its peak. Its beauty and grandeur are beyond description — you have to see it with your own eyes to understand what “magic” truly means.
