Opened to the public in 1892, Barcelona Zoo has become one of the city’s well-known urban spaces, aiming to protect wildlife, raise awareness about animal conservation, and is recognized as one of the best zoos in Spain.

As one of the oldest zoos in the world, Barcelona Zoo was once famous for its albino gorilla, which sadly passed away in 2003. However, it remains one of the most popular zoos in Barcelona. Today, the zoo is home to over 7,000 animals from around the world, representing more than 500 species. Each species has its own designated area to ensure their comfort. The zoo’s biggest highlight is its diverse range of African animals, offering visitors an eye-opening experience—especially the mischievous chimpanzees. Guests can also see rare species such as golden lion tamarins, emperor tamarins, cotton-top tamarins, Bornean orangutans, Aldabra giant tortoises, Humboldt penguins, glossy ibises, spotted imperial pigeons, black-crowned night herons, vultures, and flamingos.
