The Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya is an ancient building located in the historic city of Barcelona, serving as the seat of the government of the autonomous community of Catalonia. It is one of the few government buildings in Europe that was built during the Middle Ages and is still in use today, and it continues to be used by its original institution.

Facing Plaça de Sant Jaume and opposite Barcelona City Hall, the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya has a history dating back to 1400. The current building was designed in 1596 in the Renaissance architectural style. The palace has survived numerous historical and political disasters. A series of restorations were carried out between the 15th and 17th centuries, making it one of Catalonia’s most valuable buildings. Along with the Palau del Parlament, the Palau de la Generalitat is considered a democratic stronghold of Catalonia and holds great significance. To date, 128 leaders of Catalonia have worked here, overseeing the governance of the autonomous community.
