Palau Güell

Palau Güell is a residence located in Barcelona, Catalonia, designed by the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí for the industrial magnate Eusebi Güell. It is part of the "Works of Antoni Gaudí" listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built in 1888, Palau Güell features impressive wrought-iron coats of arms of the Güell family between its arches. The central hall boasts an ingeniously designed parabolic vault, with both the vaults and columns clearly influenced by the Alhambra. The palace’s varied and imaginative chimneys were the precursors to many of Gaudí’s later bold chimney designs, and his beloved trencadís mosaic technique was first used extensively here. The central salon was designed to entertain high-society guests. With its high ceiling and small holes near the top, lanterns hung outside at night created the appearance of a starry sky. Guests would arrive by carriage through the front parabolic archway; horses could descend a ramp into the stables in the servants' basement, while guests ascended stairs to the reception rooms. The owner could observe visitors from a small window upstairs and adjust their attire accordingly.

In 2004, Palau Güell was closed to the public for renovation. On February 1, 2008, parts of the building reopened. By April 2011, all restoration work was completed, and the site was fully reopened for visitors interested in seeing it.
