Götaplatsen

Götaplatsen is a public square in Gothenburg, Sweden, located south of Kungsportsavenyn (the main boulevard) in the city center. The square and its surrounding buildings were constructed in 1923 for the Gothenburg International Industrial Exposition, as well as to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Gothenburg.

Götaplatsen serves as the cultural hub of Gothenburg. The area around the square is home to several key cultural institutions, including the Gothenburg Concert Hall, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Gothenburg City Theatre, and the Gothenburg City Museum. At the center of the square stands a statue of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. This iconic figure symbolizes Gothenburg’s maritime power during its golden age and was sculpted in 1931 by the renowned Swedish artist Carl Milles. Unlike other European renditions of Poseidon, this one features the typical image of a tall, sturdy Nordic man, and has become one of the defining symbols of Gothenburg.
