Gripsholm Castle
Situated 60 kilometers west of Stockholm, along the shores of Lake Mälaren in Mariefred, you can see a highly prominent structure — Gripsholm Castle. This castle is considered one of the best-preserved historic buildings in Sweden and is also regarded as one of the world’s nine most famous and charming castles.
Built by Gustav Vasa in 1537 to defend against threats from both domestic and foreign sources, Gripsholm Castle is now open to the public as a museum. The castle houses furniture and decorations from the 16th century and is also home to the Swedish National Portrait Gallery, which boasts a collection of over 4,000 works. Visitors can explore the evolution of portrait art from the 16th century to the present day.
