Borås Zoo

Borås Zoo is located near the northern part of central Borås, Sweden. Opened in 1962, it spans an area of 40 hectares and is a zoological park set against an exceptionally beautiful natural backdrop. The zoo is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), participating in breeding programs for approximately 130 species of wild animals, and has made significant contributions to wildlife conservation. In addition, it is the only zoo in Sweden that houses the common African elephant.

The zoo is home to a rich diversity of animal species, including around 65 species and 600 individual animals, primarily lions, Amur tigers, cheetahs, African wild dogs, brown bears, gray wolves, lynxes, raccoons, common African elephants, white rhinoceroses, giraffes, elands, racket-tailed turacos, flamingos, Egyptian geese, African buffalo, Grant’s zebras, and white-handed gibbons, among others. Unlike many enclosed zoos in Sweden, most of the animals here live in open, naturalistic environments. The zoo strives to recreate the animals’ original habitats, featuring streams, green spaces, large trees, and hills, allowing visitors to observe the animals in conditions that closely resemble their natural lives.
