Gothenburg is situated on the shores of the Kattegat Bay, where the Göta River and the Göta Canal meet. As Sweden’s second-largest city—after the capital Stockholm—it ranks among the country’s most economically vibrant urban centers. The city is the founding location of the globally acclaimed Swedish car manufacturer Volvo, and is also home to the University of Gothenburg, which boasts the highest number of students in the Scandinavian region.

Gothenburg is one of the largest port cities in Northern Europe and one of Sweden’s most popular tourist destinations. Few buildings from the 17th century have been preserved, and the current architectural landscape is mainly characterized by functionalism, with increasing numbers of postmodern structures appearing across the city. The city’s most attractive attraction is Liseberg Amusement Park, ranked among the top ten amusement parks in the world and famous for having the steepest wooden roller coaster globally. Other must-visit sites include the Gothenburg Botanical Garden, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Gothenburg Opera House, the Little Barn Harbor, Älvsborg Fortress, Gustaf Adolf Square, Slottsskogen Park, and the Science Centre. Gothenburg also boasts a rich musical heritage, with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra celebrated worldwide for its classical performances. Additionally, the city is well-known for its death metal and melodic death metal music scenes, often referred to as the “Gothenburg sound.”

Thanks to its proximity to the sea, Gothenburg is home to numerous top-tier seafood restaurants and a significant number of world-class chefs. Over the past few decades, seven chefs from Gothenburg have won the Swedish Chef of the Year award.
