Hedared Stave Church

Hedared Stave Church is located at the border between Borås and Alingsås in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. It is the only surviving medieval stave church in Sweden and is well worth a detailed visit.

For a long time, it was believed that the church dated back to the early Middle Ages. In the early 20th century, archaeologist and architectural historian Emil Ekhoff discovered that the church was built later than the stave churches on Gotland. This is a relatively small stave church, with an interior of just 35 square meters. It originally had no windows, but was later modified with a more modern design. It received wooden flooring in 1736 and windows were installed in 1781. The interior was restored in 1901, preserving the windows, and further restoration work was carried out in the 1990s.

Inside the church there is an altar dating from the 13th century, decorated with wooden carvings of the Virgin Mary and Saint Francis. There are also vivid old paintings, which are said to have been painted shortly after the church was built.
