Gentlemen's Square

Introduction

Gentlemen's Square is located slightly north of the city center, near Herb Square and just a two-minute walk from the famous Juliet's House. The square centers around a statue of Dante and is surrounded by numerous Renaissance-era buildings.

On the left side of the square are beautiful arcades and the tomb of the Scaliger family (Arche Scaligere), which is not open to the public. However, even from the outside, one can admire the grand walls covered in crests and intricate carvings, as well as the statue of Cangrande I on horseback atop the roof. Adjacent to the tomb is the Church of Santa Maria Antica, where the tombstone of Cangrande I is located. On the right side of the square is Palazzo della Ragione, now serving as the city hall. The inner courtyard and staircase of the city hall are key highlights for visitors, as this is where the footprints of Giotto and Dante were once left.

The Lamberti Tower (Torre di Lamberti), which is attached to the city hall on the right side of the square, is one of Verona’s iconic landmarks. Climbing to the top of the tower offers panoramic views of the entire square and cityscape, as well as distant vistas of the beautiful landscapes along the Adige River. Ticket to climb Lamberti Tower: €2.1 with elevator (€2.6 for combined ticket with Scaliger family tomb from June to September), or €1.5 if climbing on foot (€2.1 for combined ticket with Scaliger family tomb from June to September).
