Once described his personal style with the phrase "I am my own film," Werner Herzog became an important director of the New German Cinema movement through his unique minimalist and non-mainstream films. Songs of Salt and Fire is adapted from a short story by American novelist Tom Bissell and was filmed near the Uturuncu volcano, at an altitude of over 4,000 meters, taking audiences to explore this mysterious landscape that one must visit in a lifetime.

Scientist Laura and her team are investigating an ecological disaster. No sooner has the plane landed than a group of masked armed soldiers forcibly escort her onto another aircraft, taking her to an unknown location. When she realizes she has been kidnapped and abandoned in a salt marsh desert, the thugs have long since driven away in their jeeps, leaving only two blind boys on the island murmuring about the white demon...

She takes on the responsibility of caring for the two boys and learns that the cause of their deteriorating eyesight is this so-called "white disaster." What is the kidnappers' motive? Meanwhile, magma beneath the salt marsh stirs restlessly, and a series of volcanic activities signal an impending eruption. Salt and fire consume each other, and this land will retaliate against humanity in ways no one could have anticipated...
