Bra Removal Photo Ops? The Bra Fence Has Become a Global IG Hotspot

The world is home to many stunning attractions. Beyond breathtaking natural wonders, uniquely man-made sights often spark conversations. In New Zealand’s Otago region, there’s a particularly unusual tourist spot — a fence along a farm road adorned with a row of bras, making it a globally popular photo spot.

The Cardrona Bra Fence originated in 1998 when four bras were hung on a wire fence by the roadside. The reason remains unknown, but the landowner found it amusing. As the story spread, it gradually became an online topic, and more and more bras were added.

After the bra fence was featured in a local newspaper, the story quickly spread to major media outlets across New Zealand. From then on, every female visitor couldn’t wait to take off their bra, snap a photo, and add it to the fence. Eventually, it became a famous tourist attraction with thousands of bras.

The fence is located beside a farm road in the Cardrona Valley. Despite its popularity, locals have differing opinions about its value. In 2006, some people considered the fence embarrassing, visually unappealing, and a potential traffic hazard on that section of the road, prompting them to ask the local council to remove it promptly.

However, around 90% of people view the fence positively, so the local farm owner refused to take down the bras, and the bra fence has remained ever since. The local government sends someone to clean it annually, removing excessive or moldy bras to maintain a certain level of tidiness.
