Qiaoyuan Park
Located at the southeastern corner of Weiguo Road Overpass in Tianjin’s Hedong District, Qiaoyuan Park sits at a key urban junction and serves as a gateway to the city’s landscape. It spreads out in a fan shape facing northwest, covering an area of 22 hectares. Originally an abandoned shooting range on low-lying saline-alkali land, Qiaoyuan Park was designed to adapt to the site’s conditions by utilizing the existing “shooting target hill” and several fish ponds, transforming them into an artificial wetland park with first-class urban landscaping standards. It is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and the largest man-made ecological wetland park within Tianjin’s six urban districts. The park spans 400 mu, with nearly 200 mu of ecological water area, and a plot ratio of less than 0.04, offering unparalleled ecological advantages. The park features 14 wetland bubbles of varying heights, planted with over 100 species of plants, including 20 aquatic species, 43 trees and shrubs, and 40 perennial plants. There are 16 flat and arched bridges connecting the water areas—the highest number of bridges in any Tianjin urban park. In addition to bridges linking water zones, there is also a boardwalk trail that winds through the park. All bridges in the park are made of wood, reflecting the eco-park’s philosophy of returning to nature. The creative design of Qiaoyuan aims to create an eco-innovative park characterized by “ecological fashion and centered around leisure tourism.” At the 2009 World Architecture Festival held in Barcelona, Spain, it won the “World’s Best Landscape Award,” marking the first time a Chinese urban park received this honor. It also earned the ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) Honor Award in the General Design Category in 2010.
Qiaoyuan Park is Tianjin’s largest man-made ecological wetland park, built from soil mounds, and won the “World’s Best Landscape Award” at the 2009 World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, Spain.
The park features various styles of bridges, hence the name “Qiaoyuan” (Bridge Garden). It offers waterside platforms, wooden boardwalks connecting these platforms, benches tucked among wild native grasses, and ponds of various sizes—making it especially suitable for elderly visitors.
The Qiaoyuan Bridge Exhibition Hall displays models of many famous bridges from China and abroad, including Tianjin’s Liberation Bridge and Jingang Bridge. As the only large park in the nearby Wanxin Village area, it attracts countless local residents daily. If you get tired from exploring, you can also relax at the teahouse or bookstore located in the southwest corner of the park.
