Situated in Brandenburg, southeast of Berlin, about 100 kilometers from Berlin, the Spreewald Forest was listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1991 and is known for its traditional irrigation system, drawing many tourists annually.

The Spreewald Forest is a one-of-a-kind natural area in Europe—a long, low-lying region crisscrossed by multiple branches of the Spree River. Its forests and greenlands are divided into countless small islands by around 200 winding, meandering streams as thin as sheep trails, forming a labyrinth of waterways stretching nearly 1,300 kilometers. Around 50,000 residents live here, descendants of the earliest Slavic settlers, who have preserved traditional clothing, language, and lifestyles. They reside on small islands separated by the waterways and continue to work to maintain the ecological balance of the forest and its surroundings, shielding it from the influences of modern life. The Spreewald Forest is one of Germans’ favorite holiday and leisure destinations. On weekends and holidays, many people drive or cycle here with family and friends to experience its idyllic, out-of-this-world way of life.

Visitors can take a sightseeing boat through the Spreewald Forest, using the boat as their legs and the water as their path. Paddling along, they can enjoy the charming and vibrant natural scenery of the riverside forests and the many uniquely traditional Sorbian wooden houses shaded by dense trees—a truly enchanting sight.
