Trier

Trier is located in the southwestern part of Rhineland-Palatinate, on the banks of the Moselle River, near the border with Luxembourg. It is Germany’s oldest city, boasting a history of over two thousand years, and is renowned as the birthplace of Karl Marx. The city lies in the Moselle Valley, flanked by gentle red sandstone hills dotted with vineyards, and belongs to the renowned Moselle-Saar-Ruwer wine region.

Trier enjoys a uniquely advantageous geographical location and is a famous tourist destination, featuring stunning natural scenery such as the Eifel and Hunsrück Mountains. In addition to its picturesque landscapes, the city also boasts a wealth of ancient Roman relics from antiquity. Notable Roman ruins include the Porta Nigra, Trier Amphitheatre, Roman Baths, Roman Bridge, Abbey of St. Maximin, and the Igel Column. The city’s medieval architecture is also distinctive, with highlights including Germany’s oldest cathedral — Trier Cathedral, the earliest Gothic structure — Church of Our Lady, and the well-known Romanesque monastery — St. Matthias Abbey. Modern and contemporary buildings also contribute to the city’s scenic charm, with standout sites such as the Basilica of St. Paulinus, Electoral Palace, Mariensäule (Mary's Column), Kuentz Castle, Monaise Castle, and its surrounding park being highly photogenic.

Trier is the birthplace of Karl Marx, and his former residence memorial is located in the old town today. It currently belongs to the property of Germany’s Social Democratic Party. The majority of visitors are Chinese, with over 70% of the entries in the guestbook written in Chinese. In response, the University of Trier has launched a project to study these messages.
