Schiller Square

Schiller Square (Schillerplatz) is a square in the heart of Stuttgart's Old Town in Germany, named after the German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright Friedrich Schiller. Schiller Square is located southwest of Palace Square (Schlossplatz). The cobblestone square is centered around a statue of the writer Schiller, erected in 1839 by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Thorvaldsen’s sculpture was the first statue of Schiller in Germany.

Starting from the southwest corner, the surrounding buildings of Schiller Square include Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church), Fruchtkasten, Prinzenbau (now part of the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry), Alte Kanzlei (Old Chancellery), and Altes Schloss (Old Palace). The late Gothic Fruchtkasten building, situated at one corner of Schiller Square, now houses the Württemberg State Museum, which features a collection of musical instruments. Schiller Square hosts markets twice a week and also has an annual Christmas market. Beneath the cobblestones of Schiller Square lies an underground parking garage, built between 1972 and 1973.
