Caminito Tango Street in La Boca

La Boca is the first port of Buenos Aires. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, a large number of European immigrants settled here, mainly from Genoa, Italy. The area is famous for tango, brothels, and cafés, and is one of the birthplaces of tango in Buenos Aires. Here, everything from food flavors to architectural styles is rich with Mediterranean charm.

Caminito is the most representative street in La Boca. Following the suggestion of Argentine painter Quinquela Martín, the buildings on both sides of the street were painted in local iconic colors, creating a vibrant and colorful streetscape, and named "Caminito" — a diminutive form of the Spanish word "Camino" (path, street), conveying a sense of familiarity. The walls along the street feature many bas-relief artworks by Argentine artists. In 1959, the government turned this street into a "pedestrian street museum," allowing visitors to stroll through and immerse themselves in a rich artistic atmosphere.
