The Obelisk of Buenos Aires

The Obelisk of Buenos Aires is a landmark of the city, located at Plaza de la República where Corrientes Avenue and 9 de Julio Avenue intersect. Designed and built in 1936 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Buenos Aires, the obelisk stands 67.5 meters tall with a base area of 49 square meters.

Initially opposed by many, the structure was almost completely demolished in 1939, but it has since become an irreplaceable icon of Buenos Aires. The Obelisk stands prominently in the city center, serving as a key reference point for visitors from around the world. Originally white, the obelisk was restored on November 1, 2005, and painted in the shade of "Paris stone." On December 1, 2005, the obelisk was covered with a giant pink ribbon to commemorate World AIDS Day. To mark the 30th anniversary of La Noche de los Lápices (The Night of the Pencils), the obelisk was transformed into a giant pencil.
