Acklins Island

Acklins Island is one of a series of islands located within the shallow lagoons of the Bight of Acklins in the Bahamas, covering an area of 120 square meters. The island not only boasts pristine natural scenery but also has an old-world charm, featuring several historic landmarks and numerous Lucayan Indian (Lucayan Indian) ruins; among them, one site is believed to be the largest Lucayan Indian settlement in the Bahamas. The island’s simple way of life and unspoiled natural beauty give it a unique character, making it one of the most distinctive islands in the Bahamas.

The history of Acklins Island dates back to the late 1780s, when settlers began to establish themselves on the island and employed over 1,000 slaves to develop cotton plantations. Following the abolition of slavery, the island’s economy declined, and cotton farming was gradually replaced by salt production and sponge harvesting. Later, the development of synthetic fibers dealt another blow to the sponge industry. Today, the island’s residents mainly rely on fishing and small-scale agriculture.
