Cat Island

Cat Island (also known as Cat Island) is located in the central part of the Bahamas and has an elevation of 63 meters at its highest point, making it the highest point in this island nation. It is said that after Columbus discovered the Americas, Cat Island was the first island he set foot on. In 1783, the first Europeans arrived here, and some say the island was named after a person named Arthur Catt; others believe it is called Cat Island because of the many wild cats living there.

Historically, the small island flourished due to cotton cultivation, but it remains underdeveloped, with residents even living a primitive slash-and-burn lifestyle. The island is rich in cat’s claw plants, most of which are exported to Italy for use in pharmaceuticals, spices, and the production of Campari liqueur. Cat Island boasts simple folkways, pristine natural surroundings, and beautiful scenery. There is also a temple called the “Hermitage Temple,” said to have been built by Catholic Franciscan friar John Hawes. Every year, many domestic and international tourists visit for sightseeing and vacation.
