Abaco National Park

Abaco National Park is located on the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas, covering an area of 22,500 acres, of which 5,000 acres are pine forests. This mangrove area serves as a haven for over 1,000 endangered Abaco parrots, also known as Bahama parrots.

The Bahama parrot is a subspecies of the Cuban Amazon parrot. Fossils discovered indicate that this bird species dates back 50,000 years. Typically growing to 12 to 13 inches in length, these birds have snow-white head feathers and bright green body plumage, making them very easy to identify. It is said that when Christopher Columbus landed on the Abaco Islands, he was amazed by the large number of parrots and noted in his travel journals: “Flocks of parrots even blotted out the sun.” As a result, the Bahama parrot was chosen as the mascot for the series of commemorative events celebrating the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of the Americas.

The pine forests of Abaco National Park not only provide a natural “home” for the Bahama parrots but also offer them high-quality food. When the parrot breeding season arrives, it coincides with the maturation of the pine cones, which are rich in protein and serve as excellent nutrition for feeding the chicks. However, during the rainy season, nests are often damaged, and many young birds perish in the rain. Currently, it is estimated that there are only around 3,000 of these parrots left throughout the Bahamas. They have been listed as an endangered bird species, and the government has implemented a series of conservation policies to prevent the extinction of the Bahama parrot.
