Grand Bahama Island is the fourth largest island in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in the West Indies. It is 12 kilometers wide from east to west and 24 kilometers long from north to south, covering an area of 1,373 square kilometers. Located at the northern end of the Bahamas archipelago, it lies approximately 96 kilometers west of the Florida Peninsula in the United States. Grand Bahama Island is both an island and an administrative district within the Bahamas, located directly west of Great Abaco Island, with an area of 1,373 square kilometers (530 square miles). Its economy is primarily based on tourism, forestry (especially pine), and fishing. The population was approximately 40,898 in 1990. The island features low-lying terrain, a mild climate, abundant pine forests, and beautiful scenery, making it a renowned destination for relaxation and sightseeing. The coastline boasts pristine white, flat sandy beaches, shaded by thatched huts where visitors can rest and enjoy the cool.
