The Royal Inland Road

The Royal Inland Road, also known as the "Silver Route." This heritage site includes 55 locations, in addition to which it encompasses five other sites already listed as World Heritage Sites, spanning a length of 1,400 kilometers. The total length of the Royal Inland Road is 2,600 kilometers, stretching from northern Mexico to the U.S. states of Texas and New Mexico.

The Royal Inland Road is the earliest and longest highway established by European colonists on the North American continent. For three hundred years, from the 16th to the 19th century, it was primarily used for the transportation of silver and mercury, while also facilitating social, cultural, and religious ties between Spain and the Americas. Although the construction and reinforcement of this road were mainly driven by the needs of the mining industry, it actually also enhanced connections between various regions, especially between Spain and the Americas.
