Guo Shixuan’s Photography Exhibition Unveils the Mysteries of Mexico and Peru

Hosted by the Mexican Trade Services Documentation and Cultural Office and the Peruvian Trade Office in Taipei, the “Guo Shixuan Lumi Kuo Travel Photography Solo Exhibition—A Journey of Discovery in Mexico and Peru” will kick off on March 15 at the Mexican Trade Services Documentation and Cultural Office. Through her images, photographer Guo Shixuan explores themes of ancient civilizations, nature, humanity, and architecture to unveil the mysteries of Mexico, the birthplace of Maya culture, and Peru, home to the Inca civilization. The exhibition runs until April 8.

Just before the 2012 doomsday prophecy, Guo Shixuan, who had worked in directing and screenwriting for many years, gave up her high-paying job and ventured alone into Mexico, Peru, and Cuba. Despite not speaking Spanish and with only limited English, she spent 62 days exploring these countries. Beyond witnessing the so-called Maya prophecy firsthand, she also sought to break through personal limits and fulfill her dream of wandering, all while documenting her journey through photography.

This exhibition focuses on the ancient civilizations, nature, humanity, and architecture of Mexico and Peru. Guo Shixuan not only captured iconic sites of Maya and Inca civilizations, such as Teotihuacan (the City of the Gods) and Machu Picchu, but also documented the natural landscapes of both countries, including the Loltun Cenotes in Yucatán, Mexico. Additionally, she presents the unique architectural styles that blend Spanish colonial influences with local cultural elements.

“The natural landscapes are beautiful, but what’s even better are the people!” Guo Shixuan said with a smile, explaining how her photos also convey the daily lives, innocence, and kindness of the locals. Nowadays, she can distinguish Mexicans from Peruvians just by their smiles, “They may not all be wealthy, but they are happier than we are!”
