Lake Xochimilco

Lake Xochimilco is an endorheic lake in the Valley of Mexico. With its shallow waters and freshwater springs in the southern part, it has become a hub for chinampa agriculture. It is the native habitat of the axolotl, also known as the Mexican salamander or colloquially as the "Mexican walking fish." This aquatic amphibian is endemic to Mexico and is famous for its distinctive appearance and neotenic traits.

In Aztec legend, the axolotl was once a god who ruled over fire and light. However, it was banished to Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City for lying and offending the heavens, cursed to never walk on land again. With their large heads, wide mouths, and long tails, they glide gracefully along the lake bottom. Due to extensive habitat destruction, the axolotl's natural range has been greatly reduced, leaving only a small surviving area with a critically endangered and rapidly declining wild population.
