National Museum of Art, Mexico

The National Museum of Art of Mexico was established in 1982 and underwent renovation in 2000. The museum aims to research, study, exhibit, and promote Mexican culture and international art from the 16th century to the mid-20th century. It currently has 33 exhibition halls open to visitors, with about 5,500 square meters of exhibition space, housing a collection of 3,000 artworks, including over 1,200 pieces of Mexican art from the 16th century onward.

The paintings in the museum can be divided into three periods: the first from 1550 to 1821, the second covering the hundred years after Mexico’s independence, and the third from the Mexican Revolution to 1950. Each period features distinct collections that reflect the evolution of Mexican culture. These artworks illustrate how Western painting influenced Mexican art, eventually merging with it to form a uniquely Mexican style. Additionally, the museum hosts seminars, lectures, and other events to promote Mexican culture among the public.
