Carpets are one of the craft art forms with a long historical tradition around the world. Iran is regarded as the birthplace of carpet weaving art. Carpets not only represent Iran’s profound and ancient culture but also symbolize Persian civilization. Therefore, Iran specially built a carpet museum to showcase exquisite carpets to tourists from around the world.

The Iran Carpet Museum is located in Tehran, the capital of Iran. Established in 1976, it collects and exhibits various Persian carpets from the 18th century to the present, making it a true paradise for carpets. It was designed by Empress Farah Diba Pahlavi of Iran. The Carpet Museum is one of the most outstanding representations of Iranian history, culture, and art, with an exhibition area of up to 3,400 square meters. It houses a collection of over a thousand precious carpets produced across Iran from the 18th to the 20th century, documenting the social life, wars, figures, and more of that era. The museum preserves a variety of ancient handmade carpets woven in different periods and regions of Iran, all exquisitely crafted and exceptionally beautiful. These carpets vary in color usage, patterns, and weaving techniques. Traditional Persian carpet patterns most notably feature blossoming vines symbolizing paradise, various mosque architectures, grand court and hunting scenes, as well as religious totems. Through the diverse range of Persian carpets, visitors can glimpse the essence of Iranian traditional culture and the influence of foreign cultures on Iranian culture.

In addition to displaying a wide variety of carpets, the museum also showcases dyeing materials used in carpets, such as pomegranate rind, indigo, walnut shells, potassium alum, and reseda, as well as tools used in carpet weaving, such as hook needles, scissors, and needle looms.
