Azadi Stadium

Azadi Stadium is located in a well-developed sports complex in Tehran, the capital of Iran. Opened in 1971, it serves as Iran’s national stadium and is the country’s largest stadium. It was built to host the 1974 Asian Games. With a capacity to accommodate 100,000 spectators, its sheer size highlights its grandeur — it is the fifth-largest association football stadium in the world, the fourth-largest in Asia, and the largest in West Asia.

This massive stadium is the home ground of Iran’s national football team, as well as that of two major Iranian clubs, Persepolis and Esteghlal. Many important Iranian matches, including numerous international fixtures, take place here. The opening and closing ceremonies of the 7th Asian Games, along with athletics and football competitions, were held at Azadi Stadium. It also hosted the West Asian Football Championship in 2004 and 2008, the Asian Club Championship in 1999 and 2002, and the AFC Champions League in 2008.
