Azadi Tower

The full name of the Azadi Tower is the "Azadi Freedom Tower." It is located in Tehran’s Azadi Square, near Mehrabad International Airport, the capital of Iran. Completed in 1971 to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire, it is a landmark of Tehran and a symbol of Iran.

Originally known as the Shahyad Tower or King Memorial Tower, it was renamed the Freedom Tower after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, when the Pahlavi dynasty was overthrown and the Islamic Republic of Iran was established. This renaming symbolized the dawn of a new era of freedom and theocracy in Iran. The Azadi Tower stands 45 meters tall, with a base that is 63 meters long and 42 meters wide. It is grayish-white in color and constructed from reinforced concrete and 2,500 pieces of marble sourced from Isfahan, symbolizing the 2,500 years of the Persian Empire's history.

A series of supporting facilities, including museums and a cinema, are located near the Azadi Tower. Azadi Square, centered around the tower, spans 50,000 square meters and features large fountains and green spaces. On Iran’s National Day each year, grand military parades are held here.
