Introduction

On a hilltop southeast of Kabul stands a fortress called "Bala Hissar," which is the oldest historical site in Kabul. From the fortress, westward along the hills of Sher Darwaza, lies a steep ancient city, said to have been built in the 5th century. It was maintained and protected by successive dynasties until after the 18th century when it gradually fell into disuse. However, some well-preserved bastions and towers on the city walls remain as the last vestiges of the ancient city’s former grandeur.
