Conquer a long-distance relationship: Indian lad pedals 6,000 km to find his wealthy bride

Have you, as a seasoned traveler, ever had a romantic encounter? Or experienced a long-distance relationship? Maintaining such a bond likely requires great effort from both sides, but few have achieved global fame like this poor Indian lad.

Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia, an Indian painter, was admitted to the New Delhi College of Art over 40 years ago thanks to his talent. There, he met Von Schedvin, a Swedish exchange student who was a relative of the royal family. The two quickly fell in love and got married just months later.

However, things weren’t as perfect as they seemed. Shortly after the wedding, Von Schedvin had to return to Sweden, while Mahanandia still needed to complete his studies. The couple was forced to separate. Three years later, Mahanandia sold all his belongings, bought a bicycle, and set off from India. He traveled through Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria, and Denmark on a 6,400-km journey to find his wife. After crossing eight Eurasian countries in four months and three weeks, he finally reunited with his beloved in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Despite facing hardships such as going without food and having his bicycle break down, he never gave up. Forty years later, he is not only an accomplished artist but also serves as India’s cultural ambassador to Sweden. He and Von Schedvin have a son and a daughter. Their love story has even attracted Hollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who plans to turn it into a movie.
