The Hazrat Ali Shrine is commonly known as the Blue Mosque. It is located in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh Province in Afghanistan, and is a highly renowned mosque. One reason for its fame is that some Afghans believe the tomb of Ali is situated here. Ali•ibn•Abi•Talib (Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, and the city of Mazar-i-Sharif means "Noble Tomb."
