Kabul Zoo

Kabul Zoo is located on the banks of the Kabul River and was opened in 1967. In its early days, the zoo mainly housed animals native to Afghanistan, making it a rare recreational and leisure “destination” in the country that garnered significant attention from both citizens and the media.

In 1972, the zoo was home to over 500 animals, with around 150,000 visitors annually. Unfortunately, during the civil war from 1992 to 1996, the zoo suffered severe damage. Some elephants, giraffes, lions, and rare birds were either looted or killed, leading to extensive destruction. Currently, Kabul Zoo is home to more than 280 animals, including 45 species of birds and mammals as well as 36 species of fish, and receives around 10,000 visitors on weekends. The zoo is inhabited by wolves, bears, foxes, monkeys, eagles, peacocks, as well as two lions and the only pig in Afghanistan. Despite the dilapidated fences and enclosures and the relatively limited variety of animals, this has not dampened the enthusiasm of Afghan visitors, as children come here to play, learn, and have fun.

To attract more visitors, the zoo plans to build entertainment facilities, such as a playground for children, and also intends to introduce animals from around the world, such as crocodiles, leopards, kangaroos, and pandas.
