Cultural Landscape of Southern Jerusalem

Land of Olives and Wine – the Cultural Landscape of Southern Jerusalem is located a few kilometers southwest of Jerusalem, on the central plateau between Nablus and Hebron. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

This cultural landscape is part of the terraced farming landscape of Battir, made up of a series of stone retaining terraces. The local residents have ingeniously utilized the mountainous terrain to cultivate layered fields. Developing terrace agriculture in hilly regions requires underground water sources, with irrigation channels used to water the crops in the terraces. This traditional farming method of terracing helps with both drainage and water retention. Some terraces are used for growing fruits and vegetables, while others, which are drier, are mainly planted with olive and grape trees.
