The population was 267,000 in 1985, primarily ethnic Azerbaijanis, along with Armenians and Russians.

The autonomous republic was established on February 9, 1924, as part of Soviet Azerbaijan. Its capital is Nakhchivan. Mineral resources include rock salt, lead, and zinc. The Aras River flows along its southern border. The climate is markedly continental, with average January temperatures ranging from -14°C to -3°C (in mountainous areas) and July averages between 5°C and 28°C. Annual precipitation ranges from 200 to 600 millimeters.

Features

The entire territory is mountainous, with the Lesser Caucasus range in the northeast and southeast; the Armenian Highlands occupy the south and southwest, with elevations between 600 and 1,100 meters. Agriculture is the main economic sector, cultivating cotton, grapes, tobacco, and grain crops. Animal husbandry is also significant. Industry is primarily focused on processing agricultural products and mining rock salt.
