Baku Miniature Book Museum

In the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, there is a one-of-a-kind miniature book museum in the world. It is located in the Old City of Baku and was established under the personal approval of former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev. The museum was initiated by Ms. Zarifa Salahova and officially opened to visitors on April 2, 2002.

While many people may not be unfamiliar with miniature books, those displayed at the Baku Miniature Book Museum have a remarkable history. These tiny volumes were collected over 30 years by Ms. Salahova and come from 64 countries, totaling more than 6,500 books. The smallest of them is as thin as a single coin. They are available in Azerbaijani, Chinese, Russian, English... The content is incredibly diverse, featuring not only classic Azerbaijani works but also rare and treasured editions from various countries, as well as Chinese picture-story books, Tang poetry, Song ci poetry, the Four Great Classical Novels, and even Mao Zedong’s poems and a complete set of the Four Books and Five Classics. During the 2010 World Expo, the Baku Miniature Book Museum specially selected 169 Azerbaijani books and 276 Chinese books from its collection of over 6,500 “miniature books” to exhibit at the Azerbaijan Pavilion in Shanghai.
